Voor het North Sea Jazz Festival presenteert Ben van Gelder The Whole Wide World Is Round, een muzikale ode aan het vijftigjarig bestaan van het festival en aan de mensen die jazz hebben gevormd en gedragen. Het centrale thema is herinnering, die band is voor Van Gelder persoonlijk. Hij groeide op boven de platenzaak Swingmaster van zijn vader in Groningen. Daarmee had hij decennialang een stand op het festival. Zijn moeder was zo geraakt door Abbey Lincolns optreden in 1981 dat een simpele vraag om een foto bij de Swingmaster uiteindelijk leidde tot Van Gelders bestaan. Het is dan ook vanzelfsprekend dat Lincoln het hart van dit project vormt. Haar poëtische teksten over afstamming, tijd en identiteit inspireren nieuwe composities, visueel vertaald door Tony Roe en aangevuld met archieffoto’s van Van Gelders vader.

Altsaxofonist en componist Van Gelder behoort tot de meest opvallende stemmen binnen de Nederlandse jazz. Al op jonge leeftijd won hij prijzen als het Prinses Christina Concours, de Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship en de Deloitte Jazz Award. Op zijn zeventiende verhuisde hij naar New York, waar hij bijna tien jaar woonde en samenwerkte met musici als Mark Turner, Joe Sanders en Ambrose Akinmusire. In die periode ontwikkelde hij een herkenbare stijl als solist en componist, waarin ook zijn interesse in kunstgeschiedenis en beeldende kunst doorklinkt. Met albums als Among Verticals en Manifold beweegt Van Gelder zich tussen gelaagde composities, verbeeldingskracht en een sterke eigen signatuur.

For the North Sea Jazz Festival, Ben van Gelder presents The Whole Wide World Is Round, a musical ode to the festival’s fiftieth anniversary and to the people who have shaped and carried jazz across generations. At the heart of the project lies memory — a deeply personal theme for Van Gelder. He grew up above his father’s record store Swingmaster in Groningen, which for decades held a stand at the festival. His mother was so moved by Abbey Lincoln’s performance in 1981 that a simple request for a photograph at the Swingmaster stand ultimately led to Van Gelder’s existence. It feels only natural, then, that Lincoln forms the emotional core of this project. Her poetic reflections on ancestry, time and identity inspire a series of new compositions, visually translated by Tony Roe and interwoven with archival photographs from Van Gelder’s father.

Alto saxophonist and composer Van Gelder is considered one of the most distinctive voices in Dutch jazz. At a young age, he already received awards including the Princess Christina Competition, the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Fellowship and the Deloitte Jazz Award. At seventeen, he moved to New York, where he lived for nearly a decade and collaborated with musicians such as Mark Turner, Joe Sanders and Ambrose Akinmusire. During this period, he developed a recognizable voice as both a soloist and composer, shaped in part by his interest in art history and visual art. Through albums such as Among Verticals and Manifold, Van Gelder moves between layered compositions, imagination and a strong personal musical language.
