Phase Shift is een high-concept elektronische live bandperformance die leeft in de spanning tussen twee werelden. Geïnspireerd door de energie van de Koreaanse underground muziekscene en gevormd door de rauwe vrijheid van Rotterdam, markeert het project een beslissende verschuiving in de artistieke stem van Chaerin Im.

Door de piano achter zich te laten, stapt Chaerin volledig in een elektronisch landschap van synths en samplers: voorbij haar achtergrond in klassieke muziek en jazz, richting een nieuw en nog ongedefinieerd sonisch terrein. Deze performance is niet alleen een stilistische overgang, maar ook een persoonlijke: een onderzoek naar identiteit, migratie en belonging tussen Korea en Nederland dat zich in real time ontvouwt.

In de kern ligt een live samenwerking met de in Rotterdam gevestigde visual artist Muxingye Chen. Vertrekkend vanuit de stad zelf — de vochtigheid van de haven, de wind door de Maastunnel en de subtiele trillingen van de Maas — vertaalt Chen omgevingsdata naar 3D visuals. Geluid en ruimte worden onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden, terwijl Rotterdam letterlijk vormt wat je ziet en voelt.

Het resultaat is een donkere, gelaagde, beatgedreven en energieke performance waarin industriële texturen samenkomen met emotionele diepgang. Geworteld in de geest van zowel Seoul als Rotterdam verandert het project het podium in een levend ecosysteem waarin muziek, stad en identiteit elkaar voortdurend hervormen.

Dit project ontstaat ook vanuit een persoonlijk moment van transitie. Door het starten van de band Neon River en het ontwikkelen van haar nieuwste EP met haar trio begon Chaerin een verschuiving in haar sound te herkennen: richting iets elektronischers, ritmischers, dansbaarders en zorgvuldiger voorbereid en gerepeteerd. In plaats van een vaste richting te definiëren, wordt Phase Shift een ruimte om deze nieuwe fase te onderzoeken en om de vraag te stellen wat hierna komt.

Tegelijkertijd weerspiegelt het werk een groeiende interesse in het uitbreiden van de live experience voorbij alleen geluid. Met een steeds grotere focus op stage design en visual storytelling benadert Chaerin performance als een totaalervaring. De samenwerking met Muxingye Chen wordt een natuurlijke verlenging van die visie: een mogelijkheid om te onderzoeken hoe geluid en beeld in real time op elkaar reageren en hoe een performance volledig immersief kan worden.

Rotterdam zelf speelt een cruciale rol in het vormgeven van het werk. De setting voelt onlosmakelijk verbonden met het concept; de sfeer en het karakter resoneren sterk met de richting van het project. De rauwe, industriële identiteit van de stad als haven wordt meer dan alleen een achtergrond; ze vormt actief de sonische en visuele taal van de performance.

Dit is een werk voor het in-between: voor mensen die zich door transities bewegen, zichzelf opnieuw definiëren en zoeken naar nieuwe vormen van expressie. Van Seoul naar Rotterdam, van jazz naar iets nieuws, nodigt Phase Shift je uit in een ruimte waar frictie creatie wordt.

Bio Chaerin Im – “Een bepalende stem binnen de nieuwe golf van Europese jazz.”

Chaerin Im (1999) is een grensverleggende pianist en componist, gevestigd in Amsterdam. Haar ongetemde elektronische jazz vermengt invloeden van Floating Points, Dorian Concept, Salami Rose Joe Louis en Sam Gendel. In haar composities onderzoekt Chaerin hoe digitale bewerking naast akoestische instrumenten kan bestaan zonder de energie van een liveband te verliezen. Met haar andere project Neon River brengt ze de debuut-EP Olsen uit, en eerder speelde ze met Jasper Høiby, Jamie Peet en Reinier Baas op podia en festivals als BIMHUIS, November Music, North Sea Jazz Festival en Paradiso.

Vanuit haar basis in akoestische projecten zoals het Sun-Mi Hong Quintet heeft Chaerin zich in 2024 en 2025 nadrukkelijk ontwikkeld tot een vooruitstrevende bandleider. Haar debuutalbum Midnight Resets (Dox Records, 2025) laat traditionele jazzverwachtingen volledig los en laat glinsterende synthesizers en Koreaanse indie botsen met complexe ritmische structuren. Die experimentele lijn zet ze verder voort op haar eind 2025 te verschijnen EP aïe aïe, met Otis Sandsjö, waarin haar hybride sound zich nog verder ontvouwt.

De Nederlandse en Europese muziekscene volgt die hybride sound met veel aandacht. Chaerin won de eerste prijs van de Keep An Eye International Jazz Award en werd door NRC uitgeroepen tot Young Artist of the Year 2024. Daarnaast leverde haar unieke geluid haar in 2025 ook een Edison Jazz Award-nominatie op in de categorie nieuwkomer. Vanuit haar achtergrond aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam creëert ze muziek waarin melodieën voortdurend verschuiven en transformeren. In 2026 is zij Artist in Focus van North Sea Round Town, waar ze nieuwe concerten en samenwerkingen presenteert.

Phase Shift is a high-concept electronic live band performance that lives in the tension between two worlds. Inspired by the energy of the Korean underground music scene and shaped by the raw freedom of Rotterdam, the project marks a decisive shift in Chaerin Im’s artistic voice.

Leaving the piano behind, Chaerin steps fully into an electronic landscape of synths and samplers: moving beyond her past in classical and jazz into a new, undefined sonic territory. This performance is not just a stylistic transition, but a personal one: an exploration of identity, migration, and belonging between Korea and the Netherlands that unfolds in real time.

At its core lies a real-time collaboration with Rotterdam-based visual artist Muxingye Chen. Drawing from the city itself: its harbor humidity, the wind through the Maastunnel, and the subtle vibrations of the Maas River. Chen transforms environmental data into immersive 3D visuals. Sound and space become inseparable, as Rotterdam literally shapes what you see and feel.

The result is a dark, moody, beat-based and high-energy performance where industrial textures meet emotional depth. Grounded in the spirit of both Seoul and Rotterdam, the project turns the stage into a living ecosystem: one where music, city, and identity continuously reshape each other.

This project also emerges from a personal moment of transition. Through starting the band Neon River and developing her latest EP with her trio, Chaerin began to recognize a shift in her sound: towards something more electronic, rhythmic, danceable, and carefully prepared and rehearsed. Rather than defining a fixed direction, Phase Shift becomes a space to explore this new phase and to question what comes next.

At the same time, the work reflects a growing interest in expanding the live experience beyond sound alone. Increasingly focused on stage design and visual storytelling, Chaerin approaches performance as a total environment. The collaboration with Muxingye Chen becomes a natural extension of this vision: an opportunity to experiment with how sound and image interact in real time, and how a performance can become fully immersive.

Rotterdam itself plays a crucial role in shaping the work. The setting feels inseparable from the concept; its atmosphere and character resonate deeply with the direction of the project. The city’s raw, industrial identity as a port becomes more than a backdrop; it actively informs the sonic and visual language of the performance.

This is a work for the in-between: for those navigating transitions, redefining themselves, and searching for new forms of expression. From Seoul to Rotterdam, from jazz into something new, Phase Shift invites you into a space where friction becomes creation.

Bio Chaerin Im – “A defining voice in the new wave of European jazz.”

Chaerin Im (b. 1999) is an unbounded and pioneering pianist and composer based in Amsterdam (NL). Her untamed electronic jazz blends influences from Floating Points, Dorian Concept, Salami Rose Joe Louis, and Sam Gendel. Chaerin explores in her compositions how digital processing can live alongside acoustic instruments without losing the energy of a live band. She is releasing a debut EP Olsen with her other project Neon River, and has performed with Jasper Høiby, Jamie Peet, and Reinier Baas at venues and festivals such as Bimhuis, November Music, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Paradiso.

Growing from her foundational roles in acoustic projects like the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet , Chaerin has firmly established herself as a forward thinking bandleader in 2024 and 2025. Her 2025 debut album Midnight Resets (Dox Records) completely abandons traditional jazz expectations. Instead, it crashes shimmering synthesizers and Korean indie into complex rhythmic structures. She continues this experimental streak with her late 2025 EP aïe aïe, featuring Otis Sandsjö, which leans more towards her envisioned hybrid sound.

The Dutch and European industry is paying close attention to this hybrid sound. Chaerin won First Prize at the Keep An Eye International Jazz Award and was named the 2024 Young Artist of the Year by NRC. Her unique sound also secured her a 2025 Edison Jazz Award nomination as a newcomer. Honed at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam , her music delivers a wide screen majesty where melodies constantly transform and evolve. She is the Artist in Focus for North Sea Round Town 2026, during which she will present new concerts and collaborations.
