Deze avond bij Fenix is een duik in de persoonlijke kant van mijn Artist in Focus-verhaal. Ik breng Koreaanse “drinking food” van Pocha Rotterdam, een Korean City Groove DJ-set van Lucas Sim en een duo-performance samen om het echte verhaal van mijn verhuizing van Korea naar Nederland te delen. Het is persoonlijk, maar ook een viering van de Aziatische community hier in Rotterdam. Ik wil laten zien hoe mijn achtergrond en roots de experimentele en hedendaagse muziek vormen die ik vandaag maak.

De muziek
Op het podium staat Sunstroll naast mij: een Zuid-Koreaanse muzikant en producer die werkt tussen Rotterdam en Seoul. Na bijna tien jaar actief te zijn geweest binnen de Koreaanse pop-, r&b- en hiphopscene als gitarist, arrangeur en componist, ontwikkelde hij een eigen praktijk waarin gitaar-gebaseerde songwriting samenkomt met ambient, elektronica, field recordings en live improvisatie. Zijn debuutalbum Distorted Diary (2025) en zijn ambientproject the sun weerspiegelen allebei een sterk persoonlijke benadering van geluid en herinnering. Samen delen we dat op het podium.

Korean City Groove – DJ-set door Lucas Sim
Lucas Sim verbindt met zijn set het begin en einde van de avond en haalt daarbij zijn inspiratie uit de pocha zelf: een plek midden in de stad waar vreemden samenkomen. City Pop, ontstaan in Japan in de jaren 70 en 80 en later verspreid door Korea en Oost-Azië, vermengt smooth jazz, funk, disco en bossa nova. Het roept het gevoel op van neonlichten en hoge skylines, van die bijzondere balans tussen afzondering en geborgenheid in een menigte. De Korean City Groove-set beweegt van het gouden tijdperk van de jaren 80 en 90 naar hedendaagse sounds die diezelfde warmte hebben meegenomen, en vormt zo samen met de performances en het eten de sfeer van de avond.

Het eten – Pocha Rotterdam
Pocha is een informele Koreaanse eetcultuur waarin mensen na een lange dag samenkomen om te eten, drinken en praten. Het is luid, warm en laat de afstand tussen onbekenden snel verdwijnen. Dat is precies waarom ik hen vanavond erbij wilde hebben.

Het menu is opgebouwd rond de gerechten waar ik het meest van houd en die ik het meest mis van thuis. We openen met cup tteokbokki: chewy rijstcakes in een zoete en pittige saus, geserveerd in een papieren beker zoals je ze op straat in Seoul koopt. Het is comfort food, street food, de smaak van thuis. Na de performances, wanneer Lucas Sim het overneemt voor de afterparty, sluiten we af met japchae: glasnoedels geroerbakt met groenten en sesamolie, een Koreaans feestgerecht dat bedoeld is om samen te delen. Gedurende de avond vloeien de drankjes rijkelijk in echte pocha-sfeer, want in Korea zijn eten en drinken onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden.

Pocha Rotterdam werd opgericht door Peter Park (Sungwoo Park), een Koreaanse chef met bijna tien jaar ervaring in de horeca — van hotelkeukens in Korea tot het openen van zijn eigen plek in Rotterdam in 2024, met als doel echt authentiek Koreaans eten naar de stad te brengen.

Eten is op een avond als deze zelden alleen maar eten. Het wordt een draad die herinnering met plek verbindt, het verleden met het heden. Daar draait deze hele avond om, iets wat je gedurende de avond samen beleeft.

This night at Fenix is a deep dive into the personal side of my AiF story. I’m bringing together Korean “drinking food” by Pocha Rotterdam, a Korean City Groove DJ set by Lucas Sim, and a duo performance to share the real story of my move from Korea to the Netherlands. It’s personal, but it’s also a celebration of the Asian community here in Rotterdam. I want to show how my heritage and roots shape the experimental and contemporary music I create today.

The Music
Joining me on stage is  Sunstroll, a South Korean musician and producer based between Rotterdam and Seoul. After nearly a decade working across Korea’s pop, R&B, and hip-hop scenes as a guitarist, arranger, and composer, he has built a practice that connects guitar-based songwriting with ambient, electronics, field recordings, and live improvisation. His debut album Distorted Diary (2025) and his ambient project the sun both reflect a deeply personal approach to sound and memory. Together, we’ll share that on stage.

Korean City Groove – DJ Set by Lucas Sim connecting the beginning and end of the night, Lucas Sim’s set draws its spirit from the Pocha itself: a place in the middle of the city where strangers come together. City Pop, which emerged in Japan in the 70s and 80s before taking root across Korea and East Asia, blends smooth jazz, funk, disco, and bossa nova. It carries the feeling of neon lights and high-rise skylines, that particular balance between solitude and comfort in a crowd. The Korean City Groove set moves from the golden era of the 80s and 90s through to the 21st-century sounds that have inherited that warmth, completing the atmosphere of the night alongside the performances and the food.

The Food – Pocha Rotterdam
Pocha is a casual Korean dining style where people gather after a long day to eat, drink, and talk. It’s loud, it’s warm, and it dissolves the distance between strangers fast. That spirit is exactly why I wanted them here tonight.

The menu is built around the dishes I love most and miss most from home. We open with cup tteokbokki: chewy rice cakes in a sweet and spicy sauce, served in a paper cup the way they’re sold on the streets of Seoul. It’s comfort food, street food, the taste of home. After the performances, as Lucas Sim takes over for the after-party, we close with japchae: glass noodles stir-fried with vegetables and sesame oil, a celebration dish in Korea, made to be shared. Drinks will flow throughout in true Pocha spirit, because in Korea, food and drink are inseparable.

Pocha Rotterdam was founded by Peter Park (Sungwoo Park), a Korean chef with nearly a decade in hospitality, from hotel kitchens in Korea to opening his own place in Rotterdam in 2024 to bring genuinely authentic Korean food to the city.

Food is rarely just food on a night like this. It becomes a thread connecting memory to place, the past to the present. That’s what this whole evening is about, something you experience together throughout the night.
