Terugkerend naar haar jazzroots presenteert Chaerin Im (Artist in Focus bij North Sea Round Town 2026) haar Trio in het Batavierhuis, samen met contrabassist Alessandro Fongaro, Artist in Focus bij North Sea Round Town 2024. Waar haar centrale project Phase Shift zich richting nieuwe elektronica beweegt, vormt het Trio de “academische basis” van haar traject, waarin piano en synths samenkomen en de overgang in haar sound wordt gevolgd — in een ruimte die een belangrijke rol speelde in haar ontwikkeling in Nederland. De avond opent met een soloset van Alessandro Fongaro.

Chaerin Im en Alessandro Fongaro begonnen hun muzikale samenwerking in het kwintet van drummer Sun-Mi Hong. In de afgelopen jaren stonden zij samen op tal van podia, wat hen de mogelijkheid gaf een sterke muzikale band op te bouwen. Als gelijkgestemde improvisatoren en componisten delen zij een grote fascinatie voor zowel experiment als lyriek.

“Wanneer ik met Alessandro speel, zijn er in het kwintet altijd momenten waarop hij deze ongelooflijke solo’s op contrabas speelt. Voor mij zijn dat momenten van ademruimte, waarin ik volledig kan luisteren, genieten en even kan vergeten dat ik zelf speel. Eerste set: Alessandro Fongaro – Immobile
Een melodie die resoneert in de stilte van een moment, de ontwikkeling van onze emoties binnen de grenzen van een muzikaal momentopname.In zijn eerste akoestische solo op contrabas beoogt Fongaro een sonisch kader te creëren waarin luisteraars zichzelf in het moment kunnen verkennen, en nodigt hij hen uit om de muziek en de gevoelens die zij oproept te ervaren met een open geest en een open hart. Tweede set: Chaerin Im Trio
Onder leiding van pianist Chaerin Im bestaat het Chaerin Im Trio uit de Australische bassist Paddy Fitzgerald en de Deense drummer Ludvig Søndergaard. Dit dynamische trio verkent een intens samenspel en grote dynamische contrasten, waarbij experimentele elektronische elementen worden verweven met akoestische instrumenten. Returning to her jazz roots, Chaerin Im (Artist in Focus at North Sea Round Town 2026) presents her Trio at Batavierhuis, alongside double bassist Alessandro Fongaro, Artist in Focus at North Sea Round Town 2024. While her centrepiece project Phase Shift pushes into new electronics, the Trio represents the “academic foundation” of her journey, mixing piano and synths, tracing the transition of her sound in a space that fostered her development in the Netherlands. The evening opens with a solo set by Alessandro Fongaro.

Chaerin Im and Alessandro Fongaro started their musical collaboration playing together in the quintet of drummer Sun-Mi Hong. During the past years they have had the chance to share numerous appearances on stage which allowed them to develop a strong musical bond. Like-minded improvisers and composers, both share a strong passion for experimentation as well as lyricism.

“When I play together with Alessandro, there are always moments in the quintet where he does these incredible solo bass passages, and for me it’s always a breathing moment where I can fully just listen and enjoy and forget about me playing. First set: Alessandro Fongaro – Immobile
A melody that resonates in the stillness of a moment, the evolution of our emotions within the borders of a musical photograph. In his first acoustic double bass solo performance, Fongaro aims to create a sonic frame for the listeners to explore themselves in the moment, and invites them to experience the music and the feelings it evokes with an open mind and heart.
